More model informationThe dance of the Muses on Helicon, Relief in marble, executed after 1844 by Georg Christian Freund, under the supervision of H.W. Bissen, after Throvaldsen´s original model from 1816.
Like the three Graces, the nine Muses too are daughters of Jupiter. They live on Mount Helicon in Greece near the spring of Hippocrene, and are goddesses of artistic inspiration. The relief portrays a festival celebrated when the sun-god makes his way past Mount Helicon. On a small mound in the middle of the relief we also see the three naked Graces. This is an adaptation of another relief modeled by Thorvaldsen as early as 1804.
