My rendition of the infamous “Demon Core”, a 14 lb sphere of plutonium originally intended as the third atomic bomb to be dropped on Japan.
Hostilities ended before it could be used, but the core would go on to claim the lives of two scientists in horrific fashion at Los Alamos Laboratory. Displayed in this model is a recreation of the core as it would have likely been configured on May 21, 1946: the day it claimed its last victim.
Included is the flathead screwdriver used by physicist Louis Slotin to separate the two beryllium spheres that surrounded the plutonium core. When this screwdriver inadvertently slipped it allowed the two spheres to form a seal around the core, resulting in a deadly discharge of radiation. Despite instantly knocking away the upper sphere, Louis Slotin recieved beyond lethal levels of radiation and died only days later. It was later melted down.
