Der Künstler Allan McCollum begreift die Gipsausgüsse der Toten aus Pompeji als naturgemachte Kopien. Anfang der 1990er-Jahre macht er den Ausguss des an einer Kette liegenden Wachhundes zum Ausgangspunkt einer konzeptuellen Arbeit. Vom Museo Vesuviano erhält er eine Gussform des Hundes, mit deren Hilfe er ‚seinen‘ Hund abgießen kann. Im nächsten Schritt (re-)produziert er den Abguss und präsentiert ihn in wechselnden Konstellationen von bis zu mehreren Hundert Hunden. Der menschengemachte und serialisierte Abguss des Ausgusses wird durch diesen künstlerischen Akt zum Kunstwerk, obwohl er sich in seiner äußeren Erscheinung nur unwesentlich von der hier gezeigten Ausstellungskopie aus Pompeji unterscheidet.
