This feature was seen by me on a South Uist croft recently. It is well known to the Crofter - their family have always referred to it as the Fairy Ring.It consists of a large number of earth-fast boulders, many on edge, forming a roughly circular feature surrounded by some very marshy rough ground. Near the centre there is a large boulder, but the rest of the interior is mostly clear of other stones.
It is likely to be the remains of a small enclosure or possible a lambing pen and may have had turf walls orignally over this stone foundation.
It is not possible to be sure of when it was created and could as easily be a prehistoric as an early modern structure, but whatever its provenance, it is a thing of beauty, but might be best not to fall asleep here!
As usual, the range pole is aligned North-South with red to North - placed to the North of the central stone. (above in the opening view)
