The Fortress of Rivellino del Porto in Chania

The Rivellino del Porto combined with the San Salvator Bastion are the main parts of the north-west Venetian fortifications of Chania in Greece, which is one of the most important construction projects of the 16th c. on the island of Crete. It consists of long walls and reinforced bastions designed by the Italian architect M. Sammicheli amidst the period of the Venetian-Ottoman wars in the Eastern Mediterranean. Until the 19th c. only minor partial modifications were made, but since then dramatic changes occurred in the site. There was a continuous rise of the sea level, which covered half of the canon vaults, new buildings were constructed at its eastern part and the wall between Rivellino and San Salvator Bastion was demolished in order to enable direct access to the sea.
