Trench J - Ness of Brodgar Excavations 2017
This trench was initially excavated between 2006 and 2008, but has been re-opened in 2017 to complete the excavation. The archaeology in this trench is dominated by a 5m wide wall – known as ‘The Great Wall of Brodgar’ - that enclosed much of the Ness of Brodgar monument complex.
The trench also contains part of an oval stone building (Structure 5) that has an interior divided by orthostats. This style of architecture is characteristic of the early Neolithic in Orkney. A small number of early Neolithic flints, including a plano-convex knife, were found in the entrance to this building. The structure is overlain by late Neolithic midden, which we hope to remove in 2017 to reveal the full plan of the structure.
