The life-size figure, is depicted wearing modern combat gear and Osprey body armour as used in Afghanistan. The statue was sculpted by former Army officer Mark Jackson, son of former General Sir Mike Jackson, using bronze brought back from Iraq, where it was salvaged from statues damaged during the conflict. It stands on a plinth surrounded by stones from Afghanistan. The 1st Battalion Irish Guards have just returned from a six month tour in Afghanistan where they suffered three fatalities. The new statue is dedicated to all Irish Guardsmen, Past, Present and Future, and was unveiled by the Mayor of Windsor, Cllr Asghar Majeed, and Major General Bill Cubitt, Regimental Lieutenant Colonel.
