The objective was to create a pavillion or formwork for a concrete shell structure that can be laser cut to facilitate constructability. The shell structure provides a continuous frame with sweeping open quadrants allowing open and free flowing ventilation and natural light. This lattice shell structure is a continuation of a personal architectural engineering study on shell structures I have pursued while studying structural engineering.
The model had been hand-built before close to a 1:90 scale, using a cross-hatch wire reinforced concrete shell structure and was capable of resisting well over 185lbs, (I stood on it).
The concept was for a project that called for an offshore platform beach house in La Jolla, California (hence the name “The Jem”) in the structural engineering curriculum at UCSD. It won best aesthetics.
