More model informationThis is a 3d model of the Khumbu Glacier which is approximately 17 km long. The lower part of the glacier is heavily debris-covered which covers the ice beneath. The glacier ice is 100s of metres thick in places and contains a network of englacial conduits which transport meltwater through the glacier. Supraglacial ponds can be seen on the surface, which can be over 100 m in diameter. Some of these ponds are stable whereas other expand and drain through time. The glacier is exhibiting surface lowering in response to climatic warming and much of the lower region is now stagnant.
