"The Longstone Rath" Standing Stone KD019-0220013D ModelNoAI
Traditionally known as “The Longstone Rath”, the site consists of a standing stone (KD019-022001-) in the centre of a large circular enclosure (diameter: 63 meters), which is defined by an earthen bank and a fosse (not modelled). It is located northeast of Naas at Forenaghts Great. An excavation in 1912 revealed a large rectangular cist with a cobbled floor that contained the remains of two cremated adults; a male and possibly a female. It also revealed that the stone was set in a socket cut from the natural bedrock.
This tall standing stone is just one of a number located in the countryside surrounding Naas, in Co. Kildare. Two of these standing stones are better known and are located southeast of the town close to Punchestown Racecourse. Unfortunately, none of these stones are accessible to the public anymore. The Punchestown Standing Stone is in fact a signposted national monument but the official brown sign now points to a tall impenetrable hedgerow. Access has been blocked for a number of years.
