While sonar surveying on the night of October 19, 2024 we came across this target. After we did numerous underwater surveys of the site it was clear that more research would need to be done to identify this site. It is very difficult to identify many of these shipwrecks that have sunk over the years. We have made some incorrect identifications ourselves, but with new technology and equipment it has made it easier to identify some of them. There has been many ROV dives by Tim and Dennis to try to identify the wreck site. The wreck was also documented in May of 2025 by NOAA and the Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute using a remotely operated vehicle. Ben Ioset Maritime Archaeologist NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries has done extensive research to uncover that this site is indeed the final resting place of the Orion.
