This knocker is on the Durham Cathedral’s northern door and is known as the Sanctuary Knocker.

Under medieval English common law, these ornamental knockers supposedly afforded the right of asylum to anybody who touched them. At Durham it gave asylum for up to 37 days, this is a replica (1980) of the 12th Century original which is displayed in the Cathedral Treasures Exhibit inside.
