More model informationThe skull of a South African fur seal – Arctocephalus pusillus
Also known as the Cape fur seal. It is a common species in southern African waters. South African fur seals usually feed on fish and other marine invertebrates, and in some areas their diets also include the African penguin. Historically, the uncontrolled exploitation (culling) of this species for their fur threatened their survival. In 1893 they were protected by an Act of the Cape Parliament and harvesting was controlled until 1990 when it was prohibited. This resulted in the recovery of the populations.
