My first thought for this project was to take a well-known painting and make it 3D as a memorial to the artist. When looking for a painting, I was thinking about how many memorials or monuments depict people when they are alive. I decided I wanted to explore the opposite of this and I was reminded of the painting “The Three Skulls” by Paul Cezanne. The painting the depicts three skulls sitting atop a table. I modeled the skull out of a cube, duplicated the skull twice, and placed them upon a platform. Cezanne was also an early influence on cubism with his geometric landscape paintings, so I added a sharp, geometric rocky landscape around the skulls. In the last few years of his life, Paul Cezanne was preoccupied with the idea of mortality. This monument serves as a meorial to him and to mortality itself.
