The “Two Martians” of Sivré III (Ennedi, Chad) 3D Model
Model_16-11092017. These two crouched figures from Sivré III (Sivré style, Archaic Period), facing each other, were dubbed “the Two Martians” by Gérard Bailloud (1960). Bailloud wrote: “The sex of the two figures cannot be determined with certainty, but the breasts, generally represented in the paintings of this style when it comes to women, are not depicted, thus we think that they should be two men”. The DStretch enhancement of digital pictures evidences one bosom below the armpit of the right arm of the right figure. This detail, missing in the Bailloud’s survey by direct tracing, indicates that the right figure is certainly a woman. By body proportions also the left figure is likely a woman depiction. The 3D model (in CRGB colour space) shows that the drawing of the right arm alongside the back of the left figure is constrained by a natural fracture in the shelter ceiling.
