after Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764 –1850); Double Statue of Princesses Luise and Friederike of Prussia; Master model, 1926; Plaster, shellacked; 174 x 91 x 67 cm; Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Gipsformerei, R-03112 (Original: 1795, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Alte Nationalgalerie)
This key work of the two princesses by Prussian sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow is presented here as a cast based on the artist’s original plaster model. Like the famous marble version, the plaster model is also part of the collection of the Nationalgalerie. Even though such plaster models precede the marble or bronze versions and capture the very first materialisations of an artist’s idea, their role has only rarely been acknowledged by art history.
