This model shows the active volcano Misti (left) (5,822 m.a.s.l.) and extinct volcano Chachani (right) (6,075 m.a.s.l.) which are located in close proximity to the colonial city of Arequipa, in the Southern highlands of Peru. With its seasonally snow-capped, symmetrical cone, Misti’s last eruption was in 1985, 198 years after its previous documented eruption. The oldest volcanic formations linked to Chachani are the so-called “sillars”, which are rhyolitic pyroclastic flows/ignimbrites containing pumice beds that are dated from 230,000 - 280,000 years ago.
