The Nautilus was a small wooden sailing vessel that crashed into Cape Liptrap in Victoria during a storm in January 1856. Four of the crew walked overland to raise the alarm which proved more difficult than anticipated. Despite their destitute appearance (or perhaps because of it) the men were treated with suspicion as convicts escaping from Van Dieman’s Land (Tasmania) had been known to turn up in the area.
This is a small section of double framing and outer planking that was recently exposed on the beach. The entire bottom section of the hull, probably to the turn of the bilge, still exists and periodically becomes uncovered.
This model was made using images from a site visit in Janaury 2015. The wreck has not been uncovered since then but the camera is poised for when it does!
