Three (wise) men in a boat (Amiens)

After the Epiphany (celebrated on Three Kings’ Day), these three wise men, or magi, or kings are supposed to have fled Herod’s soldiers in a boat. This medallion from Amien cathedral is a highly descriptive representation of this myth.

The talent of the sculptor to summarize this story in a very small space, is a real pleasure. It reminds of many such representations, such as the wonderful capital in Autun cathedral sculpted by the famous middle-age artist, Gislebertus :
