More model informationThe 285 ft iron Package Freighter Tioga was built in 1885. The Tioga was a modern ship by the day’s standards. She had a double bottom, and seven watertight compartments. She was a fast ship and in 1888 set a record for the fastest run from Buffalo to Chicago. The Tioga was hauling grain from Superior, WI to Buffalo in a blinding snowstorm on Thanksgiving 1919 when she ran aground on Sawtooth Reef off Eagle Harbor, MI. There was no immediate concern about the ship sinking until the storm intensified and the Coast Guard removed the crew from the ship. By November 29 there was no part of the ship still above water. The model was created from 4,468 30 megapixel RAW images shot by Ken Merryman on two DPV dives in the 2023 season.
