The Titan crane at the Port of Leixões in Matosinhos, Portugal, stands as a remarkable testament to 19th-century industrial engineering and maritime heritage. Constructed between 1885 and 1895 by the French company Fives-Lille, the Titan was one of two colossal steam-powered cranes designed to facilitate the construction of the port’s breakwaters. These cranes were instrumental in lifting and positioning massive granite blocks, some weighing up to 50 tons, essential for building the port’s protective structures. The Titan crane boasts impressive dimensions, extending nearly 69 meters in length and reaching a height of 17 meters. Its design includes a coal storage area, a steam engine room, and a driver’s cabin.
A comprehensive restoration project commenced in 2020. Today, the Titan crane is accessible to visitors, offering a unique glimpse into maritime history.
