In what is a first stocktake, this exhibition opens up the anthropological collection of the Gipsformerei. The representative examples reveal both the moulding procedure and the names and identities of the moulded individuals. The exhibition only presents negatives, open and closed moulds, leaving voids charged with symbolism. These voids serve as proxies for the human beings whose casts were offered for sale with no names attached to them and without them being given a say in the making of the casts or their use. Wherever possible, the inventory numbers have been matched with a name to symbolically free the persons behind these objects from anonymity.
