Portland Museum believes that this may be the top of a ships barometer. Inside can be seen the sealed end of a glass tube that may have held the mercury which rises and falls with air pressure and gives an accurate weather forecast. This was particularly important for sailing ships to be able to predict rough weather and change course when needed.
