The hallowed grounds of a Shintō temple in Japan are marked with a torii, a symbolic doorway. The torii, which is frequently painted in a vivid crimson, marks the boundary between the shrine’s sacred sanctuary and ordinary space. Other sacred locations, such a mountain or rock, are also marked by torii.
