This torture device was primarily employed in France and it was in use from 17th century to the middle to 19th century. This specific type was donated from a private collection to Centre Céramique. This type of device was widely used because it was believed to be an effective means of obtaining confessions quickly: it was small, simple to use, and posed no risk of death to the defendant.
The thumb (or both thumbs) was inserted between the bottom metal plate and the screw. By tightening the screw, the thumb was squeezed and crashed.
