The Tower of Vrdnik is located on hill deep in the woods, not far from the city Vrdnik, in National Park Fruska Gora in Serbia. It was built in the era of the Roman Empire (around 274 - 282), as one of the fortifications that served to protect Srem and the roman city Sirmium from the tribes that came from the north, over the river Danube. The Tower of Vrdnik was first destroyed by Huns, in 441 and then later rebuilt but destroyed again by Avars at the beginning of the 16th century. With the arrival of the Turks in Srem it was destroyed once more and abandoned afterwards. Vrdnik tower has huge archaeological possibilities which are not being explored due to lack of financial means, as the last excavation was done before the 2nd World War.
