These dolls have a scary face, carry a sword, and stand with both arms spread out wide to keep plagues or disasters from coming into this area. As has been tradition since the times of the Edo period(1603-1868), a festival is held every year on March 15th of the lunar calendar to renew the hair and clothes of the dolls.There used to be five dolls in this area, but nowadays only three traditional dolls and one doll for sightseeing remain. They are enshrined in places overlooking a village or on high ground from which the main road can be seen.
