Description: Travertine is composed chiefly of Calcite; fine-scale banding of browns, grays, whites, and pink of very fine-grained to no visible crystals of Calcite. Travertine is the classic construction stone, for facing and paving. Calcareous alabaster is used in polished slabs and as ornamental objects.
Essential minerals: Calcite or Aragonite, with Limonite impurities.
Non-essential minerals: sometimes none :), but frequent fossils and imprints, especially of plants. Impurities such as iron oxides may stain it red or brown. A minor amount of clays may be present.
