The location of trench 2 was chosen because it showed up as an exposed feature on the multi-beam bathymetry, which was identified as an area of iron shot. It was hoped that excavating this area would reveal the lower part of the Invincible’s hull around amidships, where the shot lockers were located. Excavation around the area of shot did indeed reveal that the shot was located on top of a significant section of structure. As the excavation area was increased it revealed a large coherent section of the lower central part of the ship.
