A multi-part photogrammetric model of a trench dug by the Enfield Archaeological Society in the woods of Forty Hall, Enfield, July 2026 on the site of Elsyng Tudor Palace. The trench was sited next to a trench dug last year, exploring the inner western edge of what we believe to be the inner gatehouse. Last year’s trench had disclosed the very end of a large truncated wall, and a very small exposure of what appeared to be a brick surface. This trench exposed more of that wall and a substantial area of the brick surface. The big surprise of the dig was a large void which opened up in the south section of the trench, and turned out to be a complete well, set partially within the cellar of the gatehouse, with a step leading down from an adjacent brick floor. The well also features two channels, one atop the other, apparently serving to bring in water from an external source. There was also tentative evidence for a mechanism set in the channels, perhaps to regulate water flow.
