Tullich Kirk, Ballater, Aberdeenshire3D Model
Model of Tullich, St Nathalan’s Kirk, Ballater, Aberdeenhire, present church building dates from around 1400 but was partly rebuilt after the Reformation in 1560. The church was in use until 1798. The church & graveyard are bounded by a circular wall, typical of this period. Folklore says this shape was to prevent the Devil finding a hiding place. Medieval documentary references show that in the 12th century the church and its lands were granted to the Knights Templar and, after the suppression of that order in c1309, transferred with their other assets to the Knights Hospitallers in 1312. A fort is thought to have been built around the church in the 13th century. The church although of medieval date, is considered to have replaced a chapel built in the 7th century by St Nathalan. Several Pictish Symbol Stones are houses in a protective shelter at the site.
