Uluburun Shipwreck KW 703 Potnia Theron Pendant3D Model
It was retrieved from the stern of the ship along with other valuable objects. Its suspension loop is typical of Syro-Canaanite jewelry. The pendant is piriform and the nude female figure represents the Potnia Theron (the Mistress of Animals), holding twogazelles. Its worked in repoussé. The figure is facing front with her feet clearly oriented to the right (very unusual for this kind of pendants). The figure bears a crown and maybe a locked wigunderneath. Potnia and Despotes Theron iconographies constitute one of the oldest types spread over the Mediterranean basin, beyond country borders. Some look for its origin to the north, in the Shaushga, or maybe as a variant of the fertility goddess Ishtar. There are well known types in the Syro-Canaanite Strip. If we focus on goddesess holding horned animals, the only parallels are in Minet-el-Beidha/Ugarit. The digital model was made from a handmade replica of KW 703 by Architecnica Productions for the didactic activity: Uluburun: A shipwreck in your pool.
