More model informationThis unfinished ovoid macehead was found on beach in Shapinsay during the 1930s and presented to the Orkney Antiquarian Society’s Kirkwall Museum by Mr W. T. Wood of Balfour Mains.
The blank for this artefact was a beach pebble of camptonite, a local igneous dyke rock. The surface of the pebble was polished, presumably to check the surface finished and look for flaws, before the form of the artefact was created by pecking. The perforation has been partly bored and exhibits striations at its base. This indicates the use of a solid drill bit with an abrasive, such as crushed flint or quartz.
