Uraeus from Decorative Panel (7043-5)3D Model
Egyptian craftspeople carved this uraeus during the reign of Akhenaten (ca. 1353–1336 BCE) between 1347–1345 BCE. It comes from the Maru-Aten, a solar temple located in the newly consturcted capital city of Akhetaten, modern day Tell el-Amarna. It was purchased along with a group of 23 other objects by the members of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Egypt Exploration Society (EES). This group came from the 1921-1922 EES excavation season at Amarna.
Cobras represented Wadjet, one of the protective goddesses connected to kingship. This cobra head was one of many identical carvings that were set into wall decorations in the temple. The dark color of this granite would have stood out against the background of yellow quartzite—a color that connects to the bright golden disk of the sun.
