“Markus Lüpertz Uranus”, which the artist created on behalf of the National-Bank AG. From the fall of 2016, “Uranus”, both embodiment and god of heaven, installed in downtown Essen, between the National-Bank and the Grillo Theater.
The external reason for commissioning the artist was the looming farewell to coal mining in the region. “After each shift, the miners looked forward to the ascent, respectively. With the farewell to coal mining, the finality of the ascent and thus the view of the sky have become irrevocable”.
Lüpertz’s “Uranus”, like many sculptures he has created before, is not simply the representation of a mythological or historical figure. Rather, his idea combines the mode of classical-antique heroic sculptures with the expressive power of his personal diction, which often exaggerates the forms and thereby intensifies their presence.
