A Federation diplomatic and humanitarian cruiser from around the same era as the Excelsior class (2290’s) and with similar styling. The ship’s interior space is dominated by a very large through-deck hangar which can be outfitted for cargo, evacuation, or fit with facilities for diplomatic talks. The general hull shape is a direct descendant of my earlier USS Gamgee.
In Star Trek Discovery, they find the Hiawatha which was a medical ship from the Klingon war. It’s weird to me that the Hiawatha would be a medical ship. Hiawatha didn’t have much to do with medicine. He was an orator and a diplomat famous for founding the Haundenosaunee Confederacy from warring Iroquois nations.
It’s neat that they used some native american historical names in the show’s ship names, but why have such a mismatched name and purpose? How about Susan La Flesche Picotte who was the first native woman to earn a medical degree? Or Annie Dodge Wauneka who helped eliminate tuberculosis among the Navajo people.
