Taxonomy: Aves>Diatrymiformes>Diatrymidae>Diatryma
Diatryma was a large non-flying bird from the Paleocene to Eocene of North America. Diatryma is sometimes called Gastornis due to its very close relationship and physical similarities to Gastornis specimens found in Europe. Diatryma was likely an herbivorous bird that ate tough plants and seeds, which differs from earlier opinions that it was a predator of small mammals. It lived in and competed with other large herbivores until its extinction in the Eocene. This specimen shows a toe bone.
