Hoplophoneus was a genus of carnivourous mammal that existed from the Late Eocene to early Oligocene of North America. As part of the Carnivora family Nimravidae, Hoplophoneus was similar in shape and form to modern felines, and are often called false saber-toothed cats. Hoplophoneus had a more robust skeleton with shorter limbs and tails, and its elongated canines were more conical in shape than that of true saber-toothed cats, and would have been the size of a large modern-day leopard. This specimen is a partially complete skull with incisors and partial canines visible.
