Virginia county prism maps of retail opioid prescriptions dispensed per 100 persons per year averaged for 2006 to 2017. Data from https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/maps/rxrate-maps.html . These maps area a subset of the map here: https://skfb.ly/6MpJx When I was looking at the national dataset, I noticed that the three highest prescription rates (and 7 out of the top 13) belonged to independent cities of Virginia. The top (north) map shows the original data and the bottom (south) map has data from 26 of the 38 independent cities assimilated into 24 (surrounding or adjacent) counties. This allows the cities and counties in Virginia to “act” more like the counties in the rest of the country to better facilitate the visualization of regional trends. Counties are shown in green and those that assimilated cities are a darker shade of green. Independent cities whose data were assimilated into surrounding counties are shown in orange and larger cities that were left alone are shown in yellow.
