The Triangular Fortress was built in 1655 by the Ottomans, probably on the site of an earlier defensive structure. It was captured in 1660 by the Venetians, who added the circular towers and other features. The castle protected the Vivari channel, opposite the main town of Butrint.
Butrint itself was a strategic port throughout Hellenistic and Roman times. In the first century BCE it became a Roman colony. It was subsequently ruled by the Byzantines and Venetians, before being finally abandoned as a settlement in the middle ages. However it retained its strategic importance into the nineteenth century.
The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, and the Butrint National Archaeological Park was created in 2000.
