La variscita es un mineral compuesto de fosfato de aluminio (fórmula química AlPO4· 2H2O), cuyo color verde-azulado le hizo convertirse en una de las materias primas más codiciadas durante la Prehistoria Reciente europea.
Con apenas media docena de afloramientos en toda la Península Ibérica, tres de ellos fueron utilizados desde el Neolítico como minas para su extracción: Palazuelo de las Cuevas (Zamora), el complejo minero de Can Tintorer (Gavà) y Pico Centeno (Huelva).
La variscita fue utilizada para elaborar cuentas de collar y otros artefactos de prestigio, lo cual hizo que se convirtiera en una materia prima muy cotizada durante la Prehistoria Reciente, permitiendo el establecimiento de redes de distribución e intercambio de variscita.
En este caso, presentamos un modelo 3D fotogramétrico de una veta de variscita procedente de Zamora, tal y como se encuentra en su estado bruto, antes de ser extraída y tratada para la elaboración de elementos de adorno.
