More model informationThe tombstone, wich can be seen in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, was made in 1870 by Jules Dalou.
Victor Noir was an apprentice journalist for the Parisian newspaper La Marseillaise. He died in 1870, shot by Prince Pierre Bonaparte, the cousin of then-ruling Emperor Napoleon III. In his death he became a republican symbol, and his funeral was attended by more than 100 000 people. His tombstone is one of the most famous of the Père Lachaise Cemetery, because of its realistic depiction of Noir, and of a legend saying that touching Noir’s bulge in his pants could enhance women’s fertility.
