The hull of this small fishing craft is woven bamboo, rafts of bamboo are fairly common and many boats use bamboo as floats or spars, but only in Vietnam and the Gulf of Siam is the whole hull made of woven bamboo. Bamboo is light, flexible, strong and rot resistant, an ideal material for local boat builders The boat was used by refugees escaping from North Vietnam to Hong Kong.
