Viking Age Round Shield

This Viking Age round shield is a reconstruction made in the project “The Viking Shield”, a joint project between the Society for Combat Archaeology and Trelleborg Viking Fortress (National Museum of Denmark). The project has sought to produce the very first authentic Viking Age shield reconstructions, where all the major components are referenced to specific sources. All parts of this shield are entirely hand-crafted and made by specialists in their fields (see model for more info). The various shield components were assembled by traditional artisan Tom Jersø in coordination with the project manager, archaeologist Rolf Warming. This level of authenticity has only recently made possible by new research (Warming et al 2020) and first-hand examinations of rare archaeological finds.
