A model (recreated) of a ‘Viking’ game piece discovered in Lincolnshire, UK. The original is a cast copper-alloy gaming piece of Viking or Anglo-Scandinavian origins, c. AD 800-1050. The original is in the Portable Antiquites Scheme database (ID Number NCL-6F7823). It’s about 2cm in diametre at its base.
This is what the original might have looked like when it was newly cast in bronze/brass (copper alloy). It was probably used for a game of ‘hnefatafl’ - more information on this popular Early-Medieval game can be found here.
The original is similar in shape to glass pieces found in the british isles, such as one found at Lindesfarne or one from the Pictish hillfort in Dundurn, Scotland.
