Viking Middleton | Cross AYour model is disabled. For more details go to Edit properties3D Model
The first of the principal three crosses at St. Andrews Church, Middleton, North Yorkshire. The side facing you as you load the model portrays a hunter with a spear, sword, shield and scramasax. Accompanied by two dogs, he hunts a stag. On the other side is a Viking art style mythical beast of some kind. I’m not a an expert on these but it appears to be a singular ‘Jellinge’ style monster, though these are usually in a symmetrical pair. Up the narrow sides of the shaft and around the arms of the cross-head are a fairly standard interlace pattern. 9th-10th Century.
