Virgen del Carmen, Stella maris, patroness of fishermen and seafarer. A bonze statue located in the harbor of Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, built up on 16th of July 2018 by the sculptor Rodrigo Rodríques.
Every year the 16th july is the “Dia de la Virgen del Carmen” On this day fisherman and seafarer honor and bless their patroness. The story began 1251 on the Mount Carmel in Israel. The abode of the old testament prophet Elias and his disciples. A holy place for the christians. The Carmelite monk Simon Stock had a vision of Virgin Mary. The vision was called Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo or María del Carmen. Due to the invasion of the Saracens the Carmelites had to leave the Mount Carmel. According to a legend, they had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Maria while singing “Salve Regina” before their departure . Virgin Maria promised to guide them savely through the sea as “Estrella del Mar” Since then Virgen María del Carmen is the patroness of fishermen and seafarer.
