Vivandière or cantinière is a French name for women attached to military regiments as sutlers or canteen keepers. In the French army they supplied military units with various goods, food and medicine. Usually they received a badge, indicating the number of the regiment or battalion, which they were supposed to accompany and serve. The headquarters tried to regulate the number of sutlers, but without success. In the Era of 1812, vivandiere is a lady usually of 30-34 years old, live, physically strong, has a sharp tongue. They often used elements of military uniforms in their clothes: shako, bonnets, soldier’s shoes. But quite often they also wore expensive dresses bought for an old song from the soldiers. Vivandière Catherine Ballan, who was distributing water to the infantry under fire, was captured by the artist François Lejeune in the painting “Battle of Chiclana, 5th March 1811”
