Autumn 1944. The German army, suffering heavy losses, retreats on all fronts. In order to replenish the army, Hitler creates the Volkssturm by special decree. Initially, all men between the ages of 16 and 60 are conscripted into the Wehrmacht. A few months later, all civilians able to bear arms are conscripted. The hastily trained old men, women, and children in their teens are to face the regular Soviet army (the Red Army) with several years of combat experience that is approaching Germany.
