Roman wall painting fragment with dipinto. Already in the middle of the 19th century, a thermal complex (so-called military bath) comprising over 100 rooms was found in the eastern area of the camp city in Carnuntum, about 400 m from the legionary camp. A few remains suggested the former furnishings of the complex, which consisted of magnificent statues and marble cladding. Among them were several fragments of paintings with painted letters in Latin and Greek. These so-called dipinti probably served as inscriptions to a scenic painting. In fact, most of them, including this piece, have an accompanying frame strip that will have enclosed the scene. To be read is ΘHPO or ΘHPOY, which may be derived from τό θηρίoν (wild animal). 10x7,5 cm.
